01 · The linear ceiling

A team scales linearly, and that is the kindest thing that can be said about it. Add a person, add output—but also add a coordination cost that grows faster than the output does. Every new member must be briefed, aligned, corrected, and reconciled with everyone already there. Past a certain size, the marginal hire spends more energy staying synchronized than producing. The team does not stop growing; it stops converting growth into output.

Underneath the linear cost sits a quieter one. The organizational chart is a loss function disguised as a structure. Counted, the real figure is higher and the output is softer than the headcount suggests, because much of it is spent on the synchronization the structure demands of itself.
